The good news for Australian Weightlifting is that Damon Kelly is going nowhere – he has his sights set firmly on Rio 2016 and then, who knows, maybe the Gold Coast in 2018.
The big Queenslander turns 31 in December and is about to become a father for the second time (it’s going to be big baby, he tells Road to Rio!)
Australia will send a team of eight to next month’s IWF World Championships in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
The team is an exciting blend of youth and experience, headed by two-time Olympian Deb Acason, competing in what could be her final International competition for Australia.
IOC officials visited Rio recently, and after expressing serious concerns about preparations earlier this year, this time found work to be progressing well.
Organisers have issued a progress report at www.rio2016.com
The Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation (GOLDOC) team is extremely satisfied with the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) Coordination Commission (Co Comm) review of Gold Coast 2018 planning and progress.
With three years and six months until the Games, Co Comm Chairman, Bruce Robertson said GOLDOC was “relative to where they should be and exactly where they need to be”.
Yes, it’s still six years away, but preparations are well and truly underway in the Japanese capital for what promises to be a thrilling Olympics.
