Sydney weightlifter Malek Chamoun will never be able to change what happened to him at this year’s Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

But the legally-blind 25-year-old took an important step in Melbourne towards rebuilding his confidence, winning the 85kg class at the 2014 Olitek Australian Weightlifting Championships.

Chamoun left Glasgow shattered after failing to record a lift, and understandably was more conservative at the Australian Championships.

In Scotland he failed on three occasions to snatch 140kg; in Melbourne he snatched 130 and 135, before once again missing 140, but then lifted 165kg in the clean and jerk to secure his title.

There was also a win for Glasgow teammates Francois Etoundi in the 77kg class, and Kylie Lindbeck in the women’s 75kg class.
