Australia will send five lifters to the 2015 Commonwealth Youth Games in Samoa in September.
The team is Yasmin Carter (NSW), Harrison Gaffney (Qld), Hailee Jarrett (NSW), Samuel Reichler (Vic) and Blake Shadbolt (WA).
The Commonwealth Youth Games continues an incredible year for 15-year-old Jarrett, who made her international debut at the World Youth Championships in Peru.
“I was nervous but I was excited,” Jarrett recalls.
“I missed my first clean and jerk, but I came back strong so I was pretty happy with that given how nervous I was.”
Jarrett said she was much more relaxed when she went to Poland for the World Junior Championships, but was disappointed with her performance.
She had three failed attempts at 70kg in the clean and jerk.
“Poland I can take on board as an experience that I can learn from,” she said.
“I was pretty shocked and disappointed with myself. It took a bit to comprehend what happened, and I was very shocked, so I tried not to show what I was feeling.
“I think it was fatigue after the first clean and jerk that got to me.”
Jarrett said she’s been training hard since her return from Poland, and felt her confidence return after the Australian junior championships in Queensland.
“I’ve done a solid two or three months training,” she said.
“I would love to hit a 60/75 in Samoa, which would be fantastic. I have no idea what to expect, I expect there will be lots of good lifters.”
