The deadline for applications to be a volunteer at the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games has been extended by one month until 15 December.

More than 160,000 people have already registered their interest in the 70,000 positions on offer, and those who have not yet had the chance to sign up will now have more time to get their applications in.

“There has been a significant increase in registrations over the last few weeks, as well as a number of requests to extend the registration period,” said Flavia Fontes, Rio 2016’s volunteer programme manager.

“It is clear that there are still many interested people who have yet to register so we have decided to extend the registration period until 15 December to give everyone the opportunity to participate. This really is the last chance.”

Applications have been received from every Brazilian state and more than 180 countries.

“We are very happy that such a wide range of people have registered for the programme,” added Fontes.
