At Athens 2004, Beijing 2008 and London 2012 the AWF was represented by only one female and only one male weightlifter. The AWF has embarked on a mission to increase its participation at the Rio Olympic Games aiming for two females and one male.

To be eligible to participate in Rio our individual weightlifters are required to contest a minimum of two Rio Qualifying Events from the list below – 2014 IWF World Championships (KAZ), 2015 Pacific Games (PNG), 2015 IWF World Championships (USA) and 2016 Oceania Championships.

It is envisaged that Women’s Team will qualify two AOC Team members by earning the required number of combined points resulting  from their efforts at both the 2014-2015 IWF World Championships and finishing in the top 17-21 nations overall.

Our top male lifter, it is planned, will be given a berth in the AOC team as a result of the AWF’s male team finishing with a top five team placing at the 2016 Oceania Championships. The challenge begins in Almaty, Kazakhstan in November, 2014!
