Preparations are almost complete for this year’s World Weightlifting Championships, to be held in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Organising Committee, Omar Mustafin, said the Championships will be a major event for the region. “Over 500 athletes will attend the championships,” he said. “No similar event was ever held in the former Soviet countries.

“The contracts with the hotels where the participants of the championships will be staying are signed, all the logistics starting from the picking up of the athletes from the airport to dropping them off at the competition sites are thought over.”

Mr Mustafin said the official World Championships website is now up and running at and the sale of tickets will begin soon.
